Our Modular Private Network service is based on Bell’s High Speed ADSL service.

How fast is ADSL?

ADSL is being introduced at speeds of 0.7 Mbps upstream (from you) and 2.2 Mbps downstream (to you). 2.2 Mbps is roughly 40 times faster than a 56K modem or frame connection. The technology is capable of handling up to 7 Mbps over standard copper cable, and within a few years, up to 52 Mbps!

The Caveats

• Location must be served with an “unloaded” copper telephone line.
• Current technology will work up to 4.5 km from the Bell or other telco Central Office (CO).
• No electronic switching devices can be on the line
  (e.g. remote telephone switch)
• Use an existing fax line – it works fine
• Quality of copper & distance impact the speeds. Bandwidth/speed is not guaranteed.
• Non-Bell lines require a letter of authorization
• Some “black holes”

ADSL Rollout

Bell Canada (Ontario & Quebec) is investing heavily to roll out ADSL. Other telcos are just as committed, driven by competition from the cable companies. They are equipping Central Offices with digital ADSL gear, building new COs and building repeater stations to extend the 4.5 km reach.
